I first saw Vietnamese propaganda posters when I made a special trip to London's V&A to see a special exhibition of posters from the Vietnam/American War. I was surprized to see they were all hand painted. Naturally when I visited Hanoi years later I was surprzed to find stone lithographs, silkscreens, and offset posters as well as the hand painted variety I'd seen at the exhibition in London. What is fascinating about these posters is the diversity of design. Influces can be seen from Soviet Socialist Realism, Chinese Socialist Realism, Cuban Graphic Design and more Central European influces. Another interesting fact is that unlike Chinese Propaganda posters, artists sign their work. I know from conversations I have had in Havana that Cuban artists and designers were in Viet Nam for periods during the War. Rene Mederos was one of them. The flat exspanses of colour found in Cuban silkscreens is sometimes found in the work of the Vietnamese designer.
