Alicia Leal was born in Sancti Spiritus, Cuba, in 1957, and she studied at Havana's San Alejandro Fine Arts School until 1980, when she graduated. Since then, she has illustrated a number of cultural magazines and participated in numerous individual and collective art exhibits in Cuba and abroad.
As a member of Cuba's National Union of Writers and Artists and of the International Association of Artists, she has also been part of juries in important art contests in Cuba and in Spain.
Alicia Leal has personally exhibited her work in Cuba, Jamaica, and Germany, and taken part in collective exhibits in Argentina, Cayman Islands, Chile, Columbia, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, France, Holland, Mexico, Monaco, Nicaragua, Panama, Russia, and Spain.
In the United States, her work has been on exhibit at the Benson Gallery, the Esthendal Gallery and the Center for Cuban Studies, in New York, the Galeria Jorge M. Sori, in Miami, the Southside Gallery, in Oxford, Mississippi, the Harriet W. & George D. Cornell Museum of Art and History, Delray Beach, and at the University of Saint Thomas, Houston, Texas.
