René Azcuy.
Born Havana, Cuba, 1939. Studied at the Academy of Arts San Alejandro and in the Upper School of Arts and Crafts. Was professor of design of the school of Architecture in the Technical Upper Institute José Antonio Echeverría. He worked with ICAIC from its foundation, designed posters, billboards, logos, film credits, film sets, record covers, books, and magazines. Has been a contest jury member in Cuba and abroad. His posters have participated in numerous personal and collective national and international expositions and has earned, among others, the International Prize Contest of Placards of Movies Filmexpo, Ottawa, Canada 1972/74; Grand Prize for Film Posters, Paris International Film Festival, France 1975/76 and the First Prize, International Festival of the New Latin-American Cinema, Havana, Cuba in 1984 and 1986. Ascuy has been Vice-president of the Plastic Arts section of UNEAC. He was awarded the Distinction of National Culture by the Counsel of State of the Republic of Cuba. At present works in Mexico.
Ascuy's work is most recognisable for its' 'half-tone' style. These designs are very demanding for the ICAIC silk-screen workshop cutters.
